anything you want to be

dsc04178Lately I’ve taken Spiderman to the little coffee place where I get – not coffee – but cream cheese stuffed pretzels, and Batman went with me to the store.

Jake has finally entered a long and proud Bohon family tradition: He’s discovered the costume box. It started with Spidey, because it’s one of his current movie faves. He was beside himself when he discovered he could actually become the webby red and blue hero. But alas, he’s potty training. The red-and-blue was a casualty of the process and went into the laundry basket. Jake was sad.

So without a single movie version in the house, we introduced him to Batman. We have the mask and everything, which sits over the eyes and nose but not the mouth – making it much more convenient in my opinion. He wasn’t impressed with the idea of a non-Spidey costume, until we showed him the action figure. He took one look at those famous black, leather abs, looked at me and said, “I want to put on Batman.”

im000084I know I’m the mom, and it would be perfectly acceptable to tell my child to remove the costume before we go to the store, but I just can’t do it. I’ve been to the store with superheroes since John first asked me to tie his cool brown blanket as a cape. He soon graduated to an actual black cape to match the mask. He was Zorro. I remember being so proud when he could return the fancy indoor cart to its stall all by himself – even if, while doing so, he sometimes ran over the elderly. I know that other parents in the store probably think I am just too tired to fight it – but the truth is, I’m secretly thrilled that Jake has joined the party.

It could be worse. As one mom told me, “If my son came dressed as his favorite character, he’d be wearing a giant, yellow sponge.”

  1. My little cousins went through this phase – Andy was always Superman and Charlie was always Batman. They both loved Spidey, too. How fun!

  2. I always think to myself, “exactly how long do you think thye are going to WANT to go tot he store dressed as Batman?” (whom I’ve taken to the store myself on occasion) and I march off with the caped crusader with a smile on my face. It doesn’t hurt that I get a kick out of thinking about telling them they did it when they’re older. :-)

This is one of the greatest mother-moves ever! Mr. Rogers would be so pleased because nothing could say “I like you just the way you are” any louder than this.

  4. Tiffany says:

Man I love those Bohon boyz! I used to have this fuchsia crocheted hat that had dangling “pigtails” hanging down on either side of my head, think of those things that hang off old fashioned curtains when you tie them back from the window. I wore that hat EVERYwhere, I never wanted to take it off, oh the family pictures, I just have to embrace my unique-ness. (lol)

Your boys are very lucky to have you, OH! The places they will go, eh?

    :)

  5. I love to know I am not alone! Jaron has spent more time in his Spidey suit than than he has been in real clothes for the last 6 months. It had to go to Grandma’s for some repairs and has been revived once again. I am going to be making a Spiderman cake for his birthday next month. And yes, the big yellow sponge would definitely be worse!!!

  6. Caroline says:

OOOHHHH! I love this picture! :) John’s blanket is so raggedy!! Yay for him (because he still uses it),and yay for you (because you allowed the blanket to be used as he wanted)! Happy dance!!!!!!!!

  7. Caroline, this picture is years old, so the blanket is even raggedier because he totally still uses it. He’s much more subtle about it now – I don’t often see it as a cape. But this winter when I filmed that short movie, we needed my character to hold her son’s blanket and I told them I had a great prop for that. I called John (spending the night with his grandma Bohon) to ask where it was in the house. “It’s not in the house,” he said – my NINE year old. “I brought it with me.” The Bohons totally get your blankets. And John’s is my favorite one ever – I guess because it was the first.

  8. You are such a good mom!!! :-) Loved this post!

  9. Caroline says:

so which blanket did you use?

  10. Serenity says:

A cowboy one Molly’s aunt made.

  11. Man, I would love to take a super-hero with me to the store. Do they have deal finding powers?

  12. Serenity says:

Quite the opposite actually. They find lots of things you don’t need and wouldn’t otherwise buy.

  13. Marilyn Goodwin says:

We didn’t have the authentic costumes “back in the Good Ol’ Days” but we did tie on capes and become what or who ever our imaginations let us be. I recall my brother, cape in place, repeatedly jumping off chairs just sure if he tried hard enough he could fly like Superman. That was ok, but the jump from the hayloft was a heart stopper. Luckily, he survived with nothing broken but still hoping to fly someday.
