My parents aren't, uh, the museum types and I didn't go to a real one until I went to college. They were great about taking us to see famous sights (monuments, national parks, etc) but no way no how were they going to look at a bunch of paintings inside a building. She thinks they should be exposed early and often and they understand more than we realize. I took Madison to Vanita's BA art show at Truman and another artist from her class did ceramics. She made these rats all tangled up in wire. Madison, 7 years old, says, "Oh, I get it. Because the rats are carrying those wires like rats carry diseases." There were many adults that did not get the meaning of that peice. The artist was astounded that a kid got it...and her own mom didn't!
