Reality Check

Hey, how come none of you celebrators told me I spelled STUPENDOUS wrong? I spend two days basking in the glow of accomplishment and of your wonderful praise. And then last night Michael picks up my computer, LAUGHS at me, and says, “Stupe-Dendous?” Whatever. I WROTE A NOVEL, DARN IT!

dsc04671Now, for a post of pictures.

Pictures of Jake walking through leaves.

Do you know how many times a day I tell someone to please get IN or get OUT of the car already?

And it’s not the fact that I’m always coming and going – that’s standard mom stuff. Frankly, I’d rather come and go too much than never go anywhere at all.

So it’s not that. It’s how urgent I always feel to get to the next place we’re going.

dsc04672What IS that? It’s not that I actually have some sort of on-the-dot schedule. And it doesn’t really matter which thing I’m leaving or going toward. It’s more like I can’t stand the transitions.

Jake, on the other hand, loves the car almost more than he loves the places. Because the car has possibility I think. And he’s never in a hurry to move through the transition. He takes his time getting out of the car. And then once he’s out he shuffles through the leaves. Back and forth. Kicking them and swishing them around.

dsc04673And I love that swishing sound. And I love how it felt today to just stand there watching him kick.

Being in a hurry wastes so many more seconds than slowing down and actually living some.

  1. You spelled stupendous wrong? We thought you were being artistic! Truthfully, I didn’t notice at all, even though I remember thinking I liked the word stupendous.

I have to write down that last sentence. It sounds like something I might read on thinkexist.com.

Your boys are so cute. What book is Jake holding?

  2. Yeah, I missed the spelling error, too. And I love the point about taking time to shuffle. Timely word in our office this week. I WILL shuffle through some leaves today. It would be more fun if I had Jake to help me. Or, if I had actual leaves.

  3. It’s a DVD – “Eight Below”. He never actually watched it yesterday, but he carried it from the house to the car a lot.

  4. …and this is exactly why you shouldn’t have friends proofread your book. :) (Unless, of course you make an exception for Michael.) We were all so happy for you, we lost our senses!
For today, it looks like the shuffling must be exchanged for swishing and stomping. (Don’t forget the rainboots!)

  5. Love this. Your last sentence is so true. Yay for fall leaves!

  6. I love this post. I have reality checks almost every day. “Being in a hurry wastes so many more seconds than slowing down and actually living some.” Well said. Perfect.
