There I Go Getting Inspired By Hollywood Again
I once heard Will Smith say that he wasn’t really more talented than the next guy, he just had a ridiculous work ethic. “When the other guy’s sleeping, he said, “I’m working.”
So the other morning in that nasty a.m. hour I told you about before, the one where life seems so unworthy of my getting out of bed at all, Will Smith was the only reason I got up. And as Michael and I got ready side by side, I felt I should confess that. “Will Smith is the only reason I got out of bed this morning.”
He knows me well enough not to be worried, but he played along. “Okaay…”
And then I told him what Will Smith said once about the work ethic and then I said, “We’ll never get what we want, if we don’t get out of bed.” And he totally agreed. “That,” he said, “is for d— sure.” Which, you may recognize, without the dashes, is a Will Smith line.
And on an even lighter note, if that’s possible, I also posted this picture in homage. It’s awards season, after all. That time of year when I come dangerously close to abandoning the Books-Are-Always-Better Club, because oh how I love my movies. Love them. I think it’s such a beautiful storytelling medium. And I love the way the people who make them create lines about love and goals and life and family, quotes that sum up so many of our big, overwhelming emotions in just a few poignant words. And then, as if I wasn’t stirred enough, they also sneak in lines about Creating itself and how it moves us and fulfills us and makes us better. I heart movie people. And the very cool stories they tell.

I’m totally going to use that morning line. Thank you, Will.
When I was a basketball player, I put weekly quotes up on the board in the English classroom. One of them was, “When you feel like giving up, just remember somewhere, someone else is practicing right now, and when you meet her in head to head competition, she’ll beat you.” I kind of forgot to carry that one over into the adult life! It is kind of the same. You can’t succeed if you don’t get up off of your butt! I love this. I love Will Smith. I am always impressed when I hear him speak in interviews and speeches. Maybe he will be my reason on Monday. I may need the extra push.
I am a firm believer in out-working the competition. I work and I work and I aspire–and when that falls flat, I pick myself up, dust myself off, and resolve to try harder. To quote Fitzgerald, Tomorrow we will run faster.
Also, I think if you love writing, there’s no disloyalty in loving great writing in different media like TV and film.
I know so many people who look down on particularly TV and I’m like, Well, good writing is good writing, right?
That’s how I look at it, May. I love to see good writing anywhere.
I love the pic of you and Will. Who knew his shoulders were so broad? Its a great line as well.
i love movies too :)
Serenity! That’s you with Will Smith! And you’re basically his height. ;)
Anyway, I love how you love movies. I love that quote and will use it the next time I need to get out of bed and don’t want to. Probably tomorrow.
Those speeches last night…there were some lovely ones, don’t you think?
Sarah, Yes! I love lovely speeches, and there definitely were some. I think I’ll blog about it later.
