That Stage Though

They all say it: I’ve worked so hard for this, I’ve dreamed of this since I was six years old, last year I watched this show from a bar across the street….. I watch them say it from the couch in my pajamas, and I raise a glass, because I hear ya, sister friend. There are way more bars across the street than there is room on that stage.

How I Saw It

Alicia Vikander in Belle-inspired yellow by Louis Vuitton. That was my favorite dress of Oscar night – so much that I don’t even have a second.

Oscar night is my favorite.

My Oscar Night 2015

Feb 23, 2015 by

This is a post for the die-hards. The people who don’t just read occasionally or click through from facebook but who love me and indulge my Oscar love and may enjoy a play(ish)-by-play(ish) of my night, my reactions, and my sum-up. It’s way past post Oscar-wrap-up time. The real ones happen within an hour or so of the show. But I haven’t yet scheduled “write the wrap-up” into my festivities. Plus, I watched them twice – once at our party, once when I got home the next day. And that takes time. I arrived at Michele’s house some time after 2:30, the afternoon of the show. She wore an apron and her hair up as she and her daughters cooked food to represent ALL TEN Best Pic nominees (e.g., southern comfort favorite, mac-n-cheese, for...

A Pre-Oscar Post: On Best Pictures and Magic...

You guys. It’s my favorite weekend of the year. Oscar Weekend is my new Christmas. It’s no longer enough just to crash in front of a television in time for the Red Carpet (and oh the painfully awkward interviews upon it). It’s really an entire season. It begins with the “Oscar buzz” talk that starts before Christmas. It builds momentum once the People’s Choice voting begins. It gets really good around the Golden Globes and SAG and Critic’s Choice. I’ve been cramming for weeks now. My friend Nikki and I took in a doubleheader in another town (The Imitation Game, Selma). I took my entire family to¬†American Sniper. Nikki came over for a really long, practically 12-year, viewing of Boyhood (that’s a joke about how it actually took 12 years to film that movie,...

My Oscar Weekend – from Pajamas to Pizza and oh Lupita’s Dress...

Mar 5, 2014 by

This was the year that Ellen ordered pizza (three large for the entire Dolby Theatre) and Brad Pitt handed out plates. It was the year of Lupita N’Yongo, the beautiful actress from Nairobi (via the glamorous stage of a recent Harvard commencement) and the breathtaking blue that she helped Prada create. It’s the year Pink wore ruby red and sang of Over the Rainbow and every montage was a celebration of Hollywood’s versions of the Hero. This year, I learned to spell Matthew McConaughey without looking and I captured for the essence of my novel his line: You are the four people in my life that I want to make the most proud of me. I rolled these memories over in the back of my mind all day, attempting to hold on to the...

Party Like You’re There

Feb 27, 2012 by

My Oscar tradition with Michele Anderson began one year when our rabbit ears on top of our tv in our little apartment just would not pick up the ABC station that was literally less than a mile away. I chose her for many reasons. I knew she wouldn’t mind watching them, at the very least. And at best, I kind of figured she would Get It. I just didn’t realize how much she would. This year Michele is moving a few hours away. She says I should keep coming every year anyway, but just in case this year she did it big. Usually I balk at dressing up too much for the show because the only way to enjoy the fact that you’re watching from home instead of from the Kodak Theater is to...

I loved them. If you know the blog at all, you know the Oscars delight me. So you’re probably wondering if – well – if they did. Plus, the last post was sadness wrapped in heartbreak, so you might be waiting to find out if I’ve unwrapped from that. So this is a yes to the first and a mostly to the second. I adored the Oscars. I loved Anne Hathaway. I even loved James Franco, and there’s really no good reason for that. I loved Billy Crystal, Reese Witherspoon’s ponytail, all the red, THE KING’S SPEECH, Tom Hooper’s mom, Mark Whalberg’s mom, every single mom. The set was my favorite Oscar set ever. And I’ve never ever never seen it end so beautifully. Usually, the best-picture presenter just says goodbye and have a...
