Lately, I’ve been posting about my day job on social media because other people can make money from it, too. Here are the details.
I work as the director of medical at Focus Insite. Focus Insite finds people for market research studies. Marketing firms pay consumers for their opinions. The firms work for companies who sell products or services and want to find out if their marketing strategies work and how people shop, choose, etc. Focus Insite finds the consumers, and you could be one of them.
What are the studies like?
It varies! Here are some things that might be asked of participants….
- One-time phone or Zoom interview (thirty minutes to two hours)
- 3- to 5-day “online diaries” in which you complete activities at your convenience each day for 3-5 days on an online platform, answering questions, uploading photos or videos, sometimes answering follow-up questions
- In-person focus group or usability of a new product (showing up at a specific place/time)
- In-home use test (have a product shipped to you, try it out…usually includes online diary as above, and you may or may not get to keep the product)
What does it pay?
This varies, too. Each study will be clear about this upfront. But listen, it’s not enough to live on. Market research isn’t something to do for a living. It’s a thing to do on the side – an awesome thing to do on the side (it pays well per hour). The trick is getting into a study. Focus Insite, for instance, gets a lot of applicants per study. The project managers receive a lot of quotas they have to meet for each study, e.g., this many people should be female, this many should be millennials, this many should shop here and buy this while this many shouldn’t, etc. When you fill out the survey, you may think you know what a study wants, but don’t try to guess. Fill it out honestly – you never know when a study may want exactly who you are and what you like or buy.
How do I sign up?
You can join Focus Insite panels here. (There are other similar companies; I’m just promoting ours, of course!) You can join all the panels or just some of them – consumers, patients & caregivers, medical professionals, business, tech, etc. Each time there’s a new study, you’ll get an email about it. It will tell you a bit about the format plus the incentive so you can decide whether to apply.
As mentioned, the tricky part is getting chosen. However, we love to get people in studies who haven’t done it recently or haven’t done it all before. Feel free to reach out to us on social media (to me if you’re a Facebook friend or to the Focus Insite page). We’ll look for you if we can!
